When a foot is neither pronated nor supinated at the subtalar joint, the directions of the curves above and below the lateral malleolus are parallel with each other. This relationship is clinically useful in determining when the foot is in its neutral position.
When a foot is pronated at the subtalar joint, the curve below the lateral malleolus angles in an everted direction from the direction of the curve above the lateral malleolus.
When a foot is supinated at the subtalar joint, the curve below the lateral malleolus angles in an inverted direction from the direction of the curve above the lateral malleolus. The lower curve becomes less concave and then develops a convexity as the subtalar joint becomes progressively more supinated.
